Sustainable Living and Real Estate

The importance of sustainable real estate

The aim of sustainable real estate development is to support the long-term ecological balance of the environment and reduce the impact of the construction industry on the environment. With the 2030 Climate Agenda approaching rapidly, and the goals being far from reached, sustainable projects have gained prominent importance.

The demand for more sustainable building options has made this market an increasingly profitable one. The green building market is forecast to be one of the fastest-growing global industries. To exemplify how much this market has grown, we can take the reference of the United States, in 2006 there was only 296 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified projects, by 2018 these certifications rose to over 67,200. The U.S government has also adopted this certification and some similar ones for public buildings.

The scope of the green building certifications goes way beyond the U.S which, with more than 96,000 LEED projects in 167 countries and territories, shows the increasing importance of the market. In the U.S alone,  the size of the green building market rose from USD$3Bn to USD$81Bn between 2005 and 2014.

Sustainability in real estate must not be limited to reducing energy consumption; it should incorporate care in the materials used and how the building is designed. Careful design can offer better airflow, for example, which reduces the use of air conditioning. Choosing materials that have sustainability already incorporated into them such as sustainable grown wood-like bamboo-over or thoughtfully produced timber can have a larger impact than we usually think of.

Reducing the use of cement, which is responsible for 8% of global emissions, is a huge way to create more sustainable properties. This goes hand in hand with a carefully crafted design and knowledge to make use of better alternatives such as hempcrete, recycled plastic options, AshCrete, timbercrete, etc.

Buildings are responsible for 40% of global emissions, and governments have done little to tackle this issue, which is why the sustainable real estate market has been driven by the increasing awareness of consumers.

Sustainable real estate development, lifestyle, and design are here to stay. We are here to help you with that

How can we can help

Aside from the sustainable home products you can find in this shop, our real estate services and renovations focus on making the most sustainable and affordable choices.

Our work ranges from renovating historical houses that date back to the 1890s to grand homes and studio apartments. We offer two main services, sustainable renovations, and real estate services.

Sustainable renovations

When we talk about sustainable renovation we do not mean adding plants in every corner of your house and solar panels to your rooftop. Of course, those are great things to incorporate if you want to but at Homemade Tomato we go deep into the details of your renovation. We take every factor into consideration to accomplish a renovation that’s as sustainable and affordable as possible. This is one of the main things that sets us apart from other renovation companies; our dedication to keeping your renovation affordable and practical for you, and the environment.

Some of the things we look into when starting a renovation project include assessing the proper budget, and manpower that will be needed. We take into consideration all the details of your property: age of the building, type of property, current materials, etc. All of this will help us identify the best materials to use given your property specifications.

We seek to avoid common errors like over or underspending when doing a sustainable renovation. We don’t want you to go way over your budget, but we also don’t want to cut corners on important elements of your property. Both things can have negative consequences on the environment and your property.

Real Estate Services

Homemade Tomato offers real estate services to help you sell your property. We offer these services as part of your renovation project, but we can also help you just with this, no renovation is needed. Robyn Chere Ison, our on-site agent, has found new owners for hundreds of properties throughout her 19 years of career. She is a highly experienced realtor and licensed broker, dedicated to meeting your needs, and selling your property as quickly as possible.
